a simple prayer request

We drove with the family from Odessa to Amarillo. We spent the evening with Lyle and Shelli Jarvis. It was fun talking with them as they had spent a few years in Hungary as missionaries. Our kids had a great time with their kids. Lyle was in college at Columbia Christian while I was at the high school. We had a lot in common.
We stayed in a hotel and got up Sunday morning for church. The church we visited is a nondenominational church called Amarillo South. They were started ten years ago by members from a church of Christ there in Amarillo. They have grown to over 3,000!
I can see why families are drawn to this church. They have a wonderful set of programs for the kids. Cheryl and I were able to to worship together. That is something that we have not been able to do as one of us has to usually take care of silas.
Cheryl is the one who takes him out so he won't disrupt everyone else.

At the end of the service there were quite a number of people who came for prayer. That was impressive.
We met on Monday morning with some of the staff and a couple of elders. It was fun to share with them about what the Lord is doing in Uganda. We prayed together. As soon as the meeting ended I started to feel sick.
We were headed out of town but I was feeling really bad so we went to a hotel for another night. I have a fever and am feeling terrible. We are trying to get ready to go to Tyler.
Thanks for your prayers.

Small World ... this will mean more to Cheryl since she's an Odessa native.
Body of Christ - Amarillo South
Music Minister - Dwayne Adams Odessa Permian 1980, Nimitz Jr. High 1977, Dwayne spent several years singing bass for the vocal band Acapella. Dwayne's dad was the preacher at 6th and Jackson CofC in Odessa, and then they opened a bible bookstore in Odessa.

Why did Amarillo South grow so fast? How did my current congregation in Houston go from 5 families to 4000 people in 12 years?

Here's a short synopsis on the whole Willow Creek/Saddleback philosophy.

1. Sunday morning is designed for the seeker. If you assume that the purpose of the service is to reach people who ARE NOT CHRISTIANS - it changes what you do and how you do it. NOTE - it doesn't change any doctrine, just the approach.

Most successful missionaries figured this out many years ago. It's sadly funny that the church in America has taken so long to become "biblically based and culturally relevant."

Most existing congregations are not willing to look at themselves through the eyes of a non-believer and make changes.

Sad...

email me a jimcoffey62@yahoo.com if anyone wants to talk more - I'm extremely passionate about the mission field right here in my backyard (secular, jaded, multicultural, new-age, hurting but they don't know why). We've developed some very effective yet simple techniques that can be used most anywhere.
